About the author

Janne Halme (b. 1976) is a researcher and educator in solar energy, specializing in photoelectrochemical energy conversion, coloured photovoltaics, and ecologically sustainable energy systems. His work combines physics, engineering, and creative practices to explore how renewable energy technologies can not only reduce environmental impact but also actively enhance vitality of ecosystems and strengthen the human–nature relationship. He is particularly interested in nature-inclusive solutions that support biodiversity and ecosystem restoration.

Halme works as a University Lecturer at the Department of Applied Physics in the Aalto University School of Science, where he teaches solar energy engineering and multidisciplinary perspectives on energy, and leads research projects related to these themes. He holds a doctoral degree in engineering physics (2009) and the title of docent in new energy technologies and solar energy (2012).

As his creative practice, he develops Photovoltarium – a collection of prints and solar cells made from plants and their pigments using solar cell technology. Through this work, he seeks for new ways to deepen and express our connection with nature while supporting the transition toward a renewable, multispecies society powered by the sun.

Photovoltarium emerges from his more than two decades of scientific research with dye-sensitized solar cells, greatly inspired and seeded by his long-term collaboration with artist and researcher Bart Vandeput (Bartaku) since 2016.
